The Headless Horseman, who is supposedly the ghost of a Hessian soldier who had his head shot off by a stray cannonball during "some nameless battle" of the American Revolutionary War, pursues Crane as he leaves a party he attended at the Van Tassel residence on an autumn night "rides to the battleground in search of his head every night.

The emotional response to a novel is stronger when it is read aloud than when it is seen on screen. When we listen to a story, our brain must produce other material to replace the words, like pictures. By doing this, "higher emotional and physiological involvement" is produced compared to when a scenario is viewed on a screen.
